Web Enabling Access Application

Are you looking to web enable your Access Application?  If you are, take a breather and assess your challenges holistically.  You may have outgrown your current application and you must look at the situation with a long term view.

MS Access is a great tool to manage and track personal databases.  Most Access applications are designed and developed without any involvement from IT as the applications are used as an individual or small team applications.  If your Access database has grown beyond a personal database and if you're facing challenges to overcome its limitations, like web enabling Access database, you must consider migrating the database to a more stable and reliable Relational Database platform.

Some of the key reasons for migrating your Access Database to a relational database platform like SQL Server, Oracle or MySQL are:

Web Enabling Access

There is no easy way to web enable your Access database. If you want your Access database to be available in a browser either through intranet or internet connections, then you must consider migrating your application from Access to a web enabled platform like SQL Server and Oracle.

Database Scalability

If your database size has grown beyond the 2GB limit, which is the general guideline for the maximum size of Access database, then you must consider upsizing your Access database to a stable and scalable DBMS platform.  Access database is good up until your database size is 2 GB and the number of concurrent users do not exceed 20.  If your database size has grown beyond 2 GB or the number of concurrent users have exceeded 20, then the chances of database corruption increases and the application becomes less stable.  In such circumstances, you must consider migrating to a web enabled SQL Server, MySQL or Oracle platform.

Data Security

It is easy to get around security mechanisms of Access Database.  It is very easy to gain access to data maintained in Access and the User Interface.  If your data is critical and you need to securely provide access to your data based on the roles of your users, than Access is not for you.  You must consider migrating to a RDBMS platform, like Oracle or MS SQL Server, that provides such inherent security features.

Limitations of Access Application

As an Access application grows in importance and more and more business users become dependent on the application, there comes a pressing need to redesign the application.  Generally, Access application evolves over a period of time.  As the usage increases and new business functions are supported by the application, tweaks and enhancements are implemented on the go.  As IT professionals are not always involved from the beginning, the application design is not stable and scalable to handle new and complex business scenarios.
